Dryer Repair in Sayreville, NJ

A dryer that runs without drying wastes an hour and a load of electricity every time you try again. And a dryer packed with lint is a fire waiting for a reason.

A stacked laundry unit opened up mid-repair, the dryer drum lifted out and standing on the floor beside the removed front panel and a technician's tool bag

ProTech repairs dryers across Sayreville and Central New Jersey — gas, electric and heat-pump, which not every shop will touch. The parts that actually fail ride on the van, so about 98% of our repairs are finished on the first visit.

Every repair carries a 60-day warranty and we install original manufacturer parts only. You get the exact price before the repair starts.

A typical electric dryer with part of its side and low front cut away: the drum, the heater at the back, the motor and the blower in its housing below, and the vent duct leaving the back of the machine.

Typical vented electric dryer — yours may look different. Places we check, not a diagnosis.

The drum won't turn

Usually it's the drive belt — a thin band that wraps the whole drum and snaps with age. A snapped belt is the most common repair we do on dryers. Open the door and turn the drum by hand: on some models a snapped belt shuts the whole dryer off, so the test is worth doing even if nothing runs.

$75 diagnostic, waived when you go ahead with the repair.

  • How it should turn: one motor turns the drum with a belt, kept tight by an idler pulley.
  • It spins freely, with no resistance at all: the belt is gone. Drive belt replacement: $265
  • It fights back: the problem is further in.

It tumbles but doesn't heat

A full cycle runs and the clothes come out cold and still wet. We work on both electric and gas dryers. Gas is a different diagnosis entirely, and one that has to be done properly because it involves a gas line.

  • How it should heat: room air is heated on its way into the drum.
  • Electric: usually the heating element or the thermal fuse.
  • Gas: often the igniter, the gas valve coils or the flame sensor in the burner assembly.

Clothes take two or three cycles to dry

It heats, but the moist air can't get out of the house. You pay for every wasted cycle, the machine runs hot enough to kill the thermal fuse, and lint plus heat is how dryer fires start. We clean dryer ducts — and if yours needs a specialist duct company, we'll tell you why.

  • Lint packed into the vent duct: the moist air can't get out of the house.
  • Lint inside the dryer: heavy lint in the filter slot means the machine needs servicing, not just a filter clean.

It stops before the clothes are dry

It shuts down partway through, or ends the cycle on damp laundry. The fuse is a symptom rather than a cause — replacing it without finding out why the dryer overheated just means you'll replace it again. A blown fuse usually means the airflow was already restricted.

  • If the thermal fuse blows: it has cut power because the machine overheated. Thermal fuse replacement: $285
  • If the moisture sensor misreads: it calls the load dry when it isn't.

It squeals, thumps or grinds

Worn rollers and a tired idler pulley are common causes. Don't run it for weeks like that: a seized roller wears flat and can damage the drum, and that is a much bigger repair.

There's a burning smell

Stop using the dryer and call. A hot, scorched smell often means lint has built up somewhere it is now being heated. That is a genuine fire risk rather than an inconvenience, and it does not improve on its own. If the inside is full of lint, we can service the machine while it's open.

The dryer won't start at all

You press start and nothing happens. The door switch can fail on its own, or a fuse can cut the power. On some models a high-limit can blow too, or the thermostat stops working. The fuse on the blower housing is a symptom rather than a cause: it burns out when the vent duct is clogged.

A dryer is one air path and one drive, plus the controls that run them. This is a typical vented dryer; condenser and heat-pump dryers have no duct to the outside — the moisture ends up as water in a tank or a drain line.

What we get called for

Dryer problems we fix most often

Grouped by what you see — find the one that sounds like yours.

The dryer runs but the drum won't turn

You hear the motor, the light is on, nothing moves. Usually that is the drive belt — a thin band that wraps the whole drum and snaps with age. There is a test you can do yourself before we arrive: open the door and turn the drum by hand. If it spins freely with no resistance at all, the belt is gone; if it fights back, the problem is further in. On some models a snapped belt shuts the whole dryer off, so the test is worth doing even if nothing runs. A snapped belt is the most common repair we do on dryers, and we carry the belts.

The dryer tumbles but doesn't heat

A full cycle runs and the clothes come out cold and still wet. On an electric dryer that is usually the heating element or the thermal fuse; on a gas dryer it is often the igniter, the gas valve coils or the flame sensor in the burner assembly. We work on both — not every shop works on the gas side, which is worth knowing when you're calling around.

Clothes take two or three cycles to dry

The dryer heats, it tumbles, and the load is still damp at the end. Usually this is airflow rather than heat: lint packed into the vent duct, and sometimes inside the dryer too, so the moist air cannot get out of the house. It is also an expensive fault to ignore — you pay for every wasted cycle, the machine runs hot enough to kill the thermal fuse, and lint plus heat is how dryer fires start. If it heats but doesn't dry, it's time to look at the duct.

The dryer stops before the clothes are dry

It shuts down partway through, or ends the cycle on damp laundry. Two common causes: the thermal fuse has cut power because the machine overheated, or the moisture sensor is reading wrong and calling the load dry when it isn't. The fuse is a symptom rather than a cause — replacing it without finding out why the dryer overheated just means you'll replace it again.

The dryer squeals, thumps or grinds

A squeal that rises with the drum, a rhythmic thump, or a grinding you can feel through the floor. Worn rollers and a tired idler pulley are common causes. A harder rattle can mean something from a pocket has got into the blower wheel — even a plastic card can jam it. Don't run it for weeks like that: a seized roller wears flat and can damage the drum, and that is a much bigger repair.

There's a burning smell

Stop using the dryer and call. A hot, scorched smell often means lint has built up somewhere it is now being heated — inside the cabinet, around the element, or in the duct. That is a genuine fire risk rather than an inconvenience, and it does not improve on its own. We once opened up a dryer we had been called to for nothing more than a squeak, and found that a small fire had already happened inside, with the owner none the wiser.

Inside a dryer cabinet with the drum removed — the blower housing and heater duct buried in lint, the duct itself rusted through and scorched

The dryer won't start at all

You press start and nothing happens. The door switch or the door lock can simply fail on its own. The thermal fuse on the blower housing passes power to the motor, and it burns out when the vent duct is clogged. On some models a high-limit can blow too, or the thermostat stops working. Some dryers also have a lint sensor that works like a switch — when it burns out, the dryer just stops.

What dryer repair costs in Sayreville

We quote before we work. No repair starts until you approve the price.

RepairTypical range
Heating element replacement$365
Thermal fuse replacement$285
Drive belt replacement$265
Why does the same repair cost different amounts?

Because the same part is not the same job on every machine. On some dryers the belt is a quick job behind a front panel; on others the top, the front and the drum all have to come out to reach it. Gas machines add a burner assembly to work around, and stacked units can only be worked on from the front. The figure you're quoted reflects your machine, and you get it before the repair starts.

From a real call

The customer called about a squeak. Nothing dramatic. When our technician pulled the drum out, it turned out we were just in time: the dryer hadn't been serviced in a long time, the inside was full of lint, and there was scorching where a small fire had already started and gone out on its own. We replaced the pulley that was making the noise and, just as important, serviced the whole machine. $385, and a very happy customer.

Every type, gas and electric

Types of dryers we repair

The layout barely changes between them — what changes is where the heat comes from and how the moisture leaves.

Electric dryers

The most common type in the US. Heat comes from an element on a 240-volt circuit, and when a load comes out cold that element or the thermal fuse protecting it is usually why. Straightforward machines with well-understood failure points.

Gas dryers

Usually cheaper to run, and not every appliance shop will work on one. Instead of an element there is a burner assembly with an igniter, gas valve coils and a flame sensor — a different diagnosis entirely, and one that has to be done properly because it involves a gas line. We work on them.

Vented dryers

Anything that pushes moist air out through a duct to the outside, which is most dryers in American homes. The duct is outside the machine and outside most people's attention, and it is a leading reason a healthy dryer stops drying.

Condenser dryers

No duct to the outside — moisture is condensed into a tank you empty or a drain line. Used in apartments and condos where venting isn't possible. Instead of a blocked duct, the trouble spots are the condenser unit and the pump, and the heat exchanger needs regular cleaning — on some models as often as once a month.

Heat-pump dryers

The newest type, and much cheaper to run because they recycle their own heat instead of throwing it outside. They also contain a sealed refrigerant circuit, which puts them closer to a refrigerator than to a conventional dryer — and means diagnosis takes someone who understands both. We service them.

Stacked laundry centers

The dryer sits on top of the washer in a single column, usually in an apartment or a closet. Everything is reachable only from the front and the unit has to be handled as one, so the same repair takes longer here than on a freestanding machine.

The difficult one

LG takes the most careful diagnosis. Its error codes sometimes point at the wrong thing, so a technician who simply reads the code and orders that part can end up replacing something that was working. In our experience the fault most often ends up at the control board — but only after the rest has actually been ruled out.

On vent cleaning

We clean dryer ducts. If yours turns out to need a specialist duct company instead, we will tell you so and explain why rather than half-do it.

How we're different

Most repairs are finished in one visit

When the part isn't on the van, a repair turns into two visits: diagnose, order the part, come back days later. Meanwhile the laundry piles up and you're running the machine three times a load.

Our vans carry what actually fails on dryers — belts, heating elements, thermal fuses, rollers, idler pulleys — so the repair usually happens while we're standing there. And if the inside is full of lint, we can service the machine while it's open rather than close it back up over the lint that caused the problem.

Worth checking first

Before you call

Checks that cost you nothing and tell us — or you — a lot.

If you smell burning, stop using it and call. Don't finish the load, don't run it once more to see. Lint plus heat is how dryer fires start, and by the time there is a smell something is already overheating.

  • Open the door and turn the drum by hand. If it spins freely with no resistance at all, the drive belt has snapped. That is the most common dryer repair we do.
  • Does it heat but not dry? Then the heat is fine and the air isn't leaving. That points at the vent duct — and possibly lint inside the dryer too.
  • Look into the slot where the lint filter sits, down into the blower housing. Heavy lint down there means the machine needs servicing, not just a filter clean.
  • Clean the lint filter after every single load. Not every few loads — every one. It is the cheapest thing you will ever do for a dryer.
Questions we get asked

Common questions about dryer repair

How much does dryer repair cost in Sayreville, NJ?

Most repairs fall between $225 and $545 depending on the fault and the machine. A drive belt is around $265, a thermal fuse around $285, a heating element around $365. The diagnostic visit is $75 and is waived when you proceed with the repair.

How can I pay?

We accept cash, checks, credit cards, bank transfer, Zelle and Venmo.

Do you repair gas dryers?

Yes — gas, electric and heat-pump. Not every appliance company works on gas dryers, which is worth knowing when you're calling around. Gas machines use a burner assembly with an igniter and flame sensor instead of a heating element, and that is a different diagnosis.

My dryer heats but the clothes are still wet. Why?

Because the heat is fine and the air isn't leaving. That usually means lint packed into the vent duct — and sometimes inside the dryer — so the moist air has nowhere to go. It wastes a cycle every time, overheats the machine, and it is how dryer fires start — worth dealing with rather than living with.

Do you clean dryer vents?

Yes — the duct, and the inside of the machine when it needs it. If your duct run turns out to need a specialist company, we will tell you that and explain why, rather than half-clear it and call it done.

The drum won't turn. Is that expensive?

Usually not. If the drum spins freely by hand with no resistance, the drive belt has snapped, and that is the most common dryer repair we do and one of the cheaper ones — around $265. We carry the belts, so it is normally finished on the first visit.

Is it worth repairing an older dryer?

We don't push replacement just because a machine is a few years old. A well-built dryer has years left in it once a belt or a set of rollers is replaced, where a cheap new one may not. Replacing makes sense when the repair would cost more than a comparable new machine — and we tell you that before you commit to anything.

Do you work with landlords and property managers?

Yes. Washers and dryers in rentals break more often than in owner-occupied homes — tenants don't look after them the way owners do — and student rentals most of all. We work across the Rutgers area in Piscataway and Highland Park.

Still unsure? A technician will tell you straight on the phone whether it's worth repairing.
