Which water system is on your bill?
Edison is split between three public water systems.[2] Middlesex Water Company covers about half of the township (50% of its area); its report with 2025 results gives hardness averaging 157 ppm, from 90 to 308 — “hard” on the U.S. Geological Survey’s scale.[3][5] The township’s own Edison Water Utility covers about a third (31%); its latest report does not list hardness.[4] NJ American Water covers a small part (8%) — its report.[12] The name on your water bill tells you which one is yours.
Hard water in this part of New Jersey is not a town-by-town thing — it is simply everywhere here. It shows up as white film on glassware, scale on the heating element and blocked spray arm holes. If we see clear signs of it we will say so and suggest a softening filter, but that is a recommendation rather than something we push. More on our dishwasher page.
